The gallery was founded by Melike Bilir in Hamburg in 2010. After completing her studies in communication design, Melike Bilir curated various exhibition projects and ran a non-profit art space named „Walk of Fame“ in 2008. By undertaking this wide range of activities, she was able to gain valuable contacts within the Hamburg art scene, including both well-known and emerging artists. The gallery moved three times before reaching its final location, on the premises of Hamburg’s principal gallery house, at Admiralitätstraße 71. Since two years, the gallery programme has focussed on installations and drawings. The aim is to use the large space to show conceptual exhibitions, which avoid reducing artistic attempts to a simple presentation of individual artworks. Presently, it is becoming increasingly important for Galerie Melike Bilir to generate international attention.
